2017 Movie #128: Johnny Mnemonic (1995)

2017 Movie #128: Johnny Mnemonic (1995)

Johnny Mnemonic is bad. Almost incoherently bad. Keanu Reeves, for one thing, does not have the range to pull this particular role off. Reeves, at his best, is capable of being an action star, but this film demands more from him and he’s unable to deliver.

There’s a kernel of a good idea at the core of this film, which is unsurprising given its origins as a William Gibson short story. But this film is almost impossibly bad; perhaps the only redeeming quality of Johnny Mnemonic is a small appearance by Henry Rollins, who appears as a semi-skeezy doctor specializing in implants; it’s a memorable appearance.

Not much of this film has aged well, but nothing has aged worse than its almost comically ridiculous depiction of the internet.

It’s hard to imagine this being remade, but I’d be curious to see this concept re-imagined within a modern context and put in the hands of a capable creative team.

2017 Movie #109: Strange Days (1995)

2017 Movie #109: Strange Days (1995)

Kathryn Bigelow’s Strange Days is a bizarre oddity of a film; it’s almost impossible to think that this film got made. This is an unwieldy film full of big ideas, ideas about race, about sex, visions of the future that prove prescient in some ways and bizarrely misguided in others. If Strange Days represents something of a creative misfire on Bigelow’s part, a film that is almost unpalatable to watch because of how far out of left field it is, it also represents a complete, bold creative swing.

2017 Movie #74: Get Shorty (1995)

2017 Movie #74: Get Shorty (1995)

This review is part of my Remake Preview series, where I watch the original version (or versions) of a movie that is set to be re-made in the near future.

Barry Sonnenfeld’s Get Shorty, adapted from a novel by the late Elmore Leonard, is endlessly fun, funny, and all-around entertaining. Featuring a top-to-bottom cast of stars and character actors, Get Shorty is a crime thriller with a real sense of humor to it, the kind of light film that makes for a perfect watch at any time.

2017 Movie #73: Heat (1995)

2017 Movie #73: Heat (1995)

The 1990s featured a spate of big films about crime and criminals, many starring some of the greatest actors working in Hollywood. Films like GoodfellasCasinoA Bronx TaleRoninDonnie Brasco, and Cop Land helped to define an era of the genre, and few actors were more important to this era than Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. Michael Mann’s Heat features both of them, at the peak of their abilities, and thanks to Mann’s memorable neo-noir style, Heat manages to be among the standouts of the genre.

2017 Movie #20: Ghost in the Shell (1995)

2017 Movie #20: Ghost in the Shell (1995)

This review is part of my Remake Preview series, where I watch the original version (or versions) of a movie that is set to be re-made in the near future.

Between films like LucyHer, and Under the Skin, Scarlett Johansson seems to be incredibly interested in the subject of transhumanism, what it means to be human. Her next major starring role is in the 2017 live-action remake of Ghost in the Shell, due out on March 31st, and if the 1995 anime film (originally based on a 1989 manga series) is any indication, transhumanism will remain firmly in her wheelhouse.
